Due to writing a show and LIFE, it has been a while since I sat down to write, but I felt a need to write about today's topic: Cabarabia: Clifford Bell and Friends. I've done several blogs over the years on Clifford's annual celebration of all things Barbra Streisand.

I was so happy to see Richard Skipper's anniversary show at St. Luke's on August 5th! He is a consummate entertainer. The show was fun and engaging. Richard is a natural entertainer who is clearly full of joy on stage. I also learned something - he and I share the same favorite movie! NYC is the better that he braved moving here 40 years ago.

It's hard to believe that one week from tomorrow is the Bistro Awards! I remember when they first began and, here we are 26 years later. The Bistros are my favorite award night because the recipients and the audience already know who the winners are. AND THEY EACH PERFORM ONE SONG!
The tension and anxiety are devoid from the evening except for Sherry Eaker who, of course,is anxious to make sure that everything stays on course and falls into place as planned. (I'm knocking on wood as I say this)...It always does. Thank God for Sherry carrying on the tradition of the Bistros and keeping this going. Some of you may recall, it used to be called THE BACK STAGE BISTRO AWARD. At least that is what it was called when I won it in 1998. 13 years ago!The Bistros started when Bob Harrington, who until his untimely death, was the Bistro Bits columnist for BACK STAGE. For the first couple of years, his pics were just listed in his column. Then, he and Sherry decided to make it an actual awards ceremony. The Award winners are decided upon by a committee of critics who pick those they feel have created outstanding work within the past year and deserve recognition. You also can only win once in a particular category. They also have a limit to the number of recipients...otherwise this would become at least a 5 hour event! The first couple of years, the recipients received a certificate, THEN it became an actual award, and has moved on to be a very beautiful award for those who receive it. BACK STAGE changed hands several years ago. Sherry is no longer affiliated with the paper, but she carries on this tradition because of her love of the medium. She deserves a special award alone for this! Supporting this evening not only honors our winners but keeps this tradition going. Yesterday, I wrote about three of our recipients this year: Carol Channing, Tyne Daly, and Dionne Warwick. Today, I'm focusing on three more of our recipients...MICHAEL FEINSTEIN, LIZ LARK BROWN, and NATE BUCCIERI.
A Special Award will be given to Michael Feinstein for his three-part documentary series “Michael Feinstein’s American Songbook,” (written, directed, and produced by Amber Edwards) shown on PBS and now available on DVD, which celebrates and explores the history of the Great American Songbook, and for the other work the Michael Feinstein Foundation does to promote and preserve our musical heritage. I am a HUGE fan of Michael's. I also am a huge fan of Amber Edwards' work! Kudos to you, as well, Amber!
Emily Cary 04/16/11 8:05 PM Special to The Washington Examiner Michael Feinstein returns to Washington for a solo concert in the Kennedy Center celebrating the songs he recorded for the Sinatra Project and other favorites.
"The project was my way of thanking Frank Sinatra for his kindness to me at the start of my career," he said. "His professionalism was a great influence on me and I've tried to emulate his ability to present a song."
Feinstein grew up in Columbus, Ohio, enamored by the popular music he began playing in local piano bars. He was only 20 when he made his way to L.A. and soon met pianist Oscar Levant who introduced him to Ira Gershwin. He accepted Gershwin's invitation to become his assistant and, for the next six years, archived the published and unpublished songs by Ira and George. Along the way, he met and became caretaker of music by other major composers. Today he serves on the Library of Congress' National Recording Preservation Board.
This past February, the Feinstein's work began making its way to the new Center for Performing Arts in Carmel, Ind., a multimillion-dollar complex holding a museum and library with interactive displays and online access around the world. The 1,600-seat Palladium Theater, opened in February, will host guest artists. "The museum and library will be completed in about two years," Feinstein said. "It will grow incrementally as we transfer in the many orchestrations, original sheet music and artwork. In the meantime, I continue sifting through my collection and occasionally make important discoveries. Several years ago during my research I found a lost song by Cole Porter written for 'The Gay Divorcee.' Last year, I found an unknown Johnny Mercer song."
This year began with another success for Feinstein, a duo CD with Broadway legend Barbara Cook. Titled "Cheek To Cheek," it alternates their harmonious duets with solo interpretations of timeless pop standards like "Without A Song," "I've Got You Under My Skin" and "There'll Be Some Changes Made."
Never standing still, Feinstein has projects aplenty underway, including writing the score for "The Gold Room," a musical about the heiress Barbara Hutton set during the period of her life in the 1950s when she gave up her residence to the U.S. government. He is also composing the score for a musical based on MGM's "The Thomas Crown Affair."
"I love composing, performing and sharing this wonderful music with my audiences," he said. "In looking back at all I've managed to accomplish and ahead to future opportunities, I feel very lucky."

Our next recipient is LIZ LARK BROWN for her outstanding debut, TARNISHED, at The Metropolitan Room.On Monday August 31,2009 Liz Lark Brown eked out a win in the exciting finale of the second annual "MetroStar Talent Challenge" at The Metropolitan Room, beating out Danielle Grabianowski (the first runner-up...who won a Bistro Award last year) and Carole Bufford...another Bistro Award winner this year!, who was chosen as the second runner-up. Brown, who, in a sweet twist of fate, was 2008's grand prize winner Anne Steele's back-up singer, combined both understated charm and a flair for the dramatic that earned consistently high marks during the eight-week jury and audience-voted singers' competition. The two other finalists, who went head to head against the three top ladies, were the competition's highest-achieving men, Cornelius Bates, and the late great David Gurland. Liz has paid her dues and now it is time for her to shine in the spotlight! Liz is also nominated for a MAC Award (May 10th) for her debut show.

The Vineyard Theater opened the new Kander & Ebb musical, THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS on Wednesday, March 10, 2010. Already, the Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award-winning Vineyard Theatre has announced a two week extension for the show, which will play through April 18. THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS was previously scheduled to run through April 4. THE SCOTTSBORO BOYS has book by David Thompson and direction and choreography by Susan Stroman, and features a cast which includes: Sean Bradford, Josh Breckenridge, Derrick Cobey, John Cullum, Brandon Victor Dixon, Colman Domingo, Rodney Hicks, KendRick Jones, Forrest McClendon, Julius Thomas III, Sharon Washington, Cody Ryan Wise, and Christian Dante White. The New York City Gay Men's Chorus' Big GAY Sing 2 takes last year's sellout sing along and turns up the dial. This show has it all - including the chance to sing a solo with the Chorus in our Big Gay Idol competition. NYCGMC has appeared with guests artists including Academy Award winners Liza Minnelli and Joel Grey, Grammy Award winners Marilyn Horne and Cyndi Lauper, Tony Award-winning actors Carol Channing, Harvey Fierstein, Faith Prince and Kristin Chenoweth and Olympic Gold Medalist Greg Luganis, Richard Skipper as Carol Channing, as well as joint performances with Stonewall Chorale, Lavender Light Gospel Choir, Boston Gay Men's Chorus, Gay Men's Chorus of Washington D.C., Noot an der Mann (Amsterdam), Schola Cantorosa (Hamburg) and other choruses from around the world. As the membership continues to grow and diversif y, the Chorus will continue to extend its message of love, compassion, and positive examples of gay lives for many years to come.
CHARLES BEALE (Artistic Director) Prior to arriving in New York last season, Charles Beale was Music Director of the London Gay Men's Chorus from 2002-2007. Originally trained as an organist, he studied music at Cambridge and later jazz at Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, where he won the Rose Morris Prize as a composer and jazz pianist. Charlie has a stylistically diverse and active freelance performing career. He recently directed members of the London Philharmonic Orchestra in an improvised performance at one of London's major concert halls. His playing has also included national radio broadcasts as a classical pianist, a jazz organ concerto with the UK's National Youth Jazz Orchestra, West End theatre work, playing and arranging credits on albums and singles by pop and dance artists including Whitney Houston and Adeva, and regular jazz in and around London, with the likes of Bobby Wellins and the Frank Williams African Jazz Quintet. He was an active member of the Association of British Choral Directors, where he gave clinics on improvising and swing with choirs. He co-wrote a new Voiceworks book for OUP and has written a number of arrangements for Faber's acclaimed Choral Basics series. He is also an award-winning author. Charlie's most recent book 'Popular Voiceworks', a book of songs and vocal arrangements with workshops and backing CDs, was recently voted 'Best Pop Music Publication 2008' by the Music Industries Association of the UK. Charlie also has a burgeoning career as an educator and academic specializing in jazz. He taught jazz at the Royal College of Music in London, where he was Area leader for Aural training, Professor of Jazz Piano and director of the Royal College of Music Big Band. Since completing his Ph.D. in 2001, he has written a critically acclaimed book, Jazz Piano from Scratch, and a number of important academic articles, including the chapter on Jazz Education in the recent Oxford Companion to Jazz. He was Lead Jazz Consultant to the Associated Board for ten years, helping design new syllabi, train and moderate examiners and facilitate workshops and seminars for teachers, and was nominated for a Jazz Parliamentary Award in 2005 for services to jazz education. In the past four years, he has toured internationally, adjudicating, examining and doing ABRSM jazz workshops for teachers in the UK, the US, New Zealand, Australia, Malaysia and Singapore.
PETULA CLARK (Guest Star) Petula Clark is an English singer, actress, and composer who sold more than 68 million records throughout her career and appeared in more than 30 British and American films. Clark's professional career began as an entertainer on BBC Radio during World War II. During the 1960s she became known internationally for her popular upbeat hits, including "Downtown," "I Know a Place," "My Love," "Colour My World," "A Sign of the Times," and "Don't Sleep in the Subway." She has continued to perform in the West End, on Broadway, and in concert tours around the world.
SCOTT NEVINS (Host) Award winning Host, TV/Radio Personality, Comedian and Celebrity Interviewer Scott Nevins can currently be seen every Thursday night on TruTV's hit show "The Smoking Gun Presents" and hosting the red carpet at A-list Hollywood events for TV Land. Scott has hosted hundreds of live events, and has collected a roster of celebrity interviews to rival a seasoned veteran twice his age, working with some of the industries best including the legendary Liza Minnelli, Susan Lucci, Lynn Redgrave, Laura Linney, Rosie O'Donnell, Tammy Faye Messner-Bakker, and countless other Film, TV, Theater, and Recording stars. Scott has appeared on National Television on NBC's "First Look NY", the Style Network's "Relationship Rehab", San Francisco's KRON 4 Morning News, QTV, Logo, Fuse TV, , and on MNN Television as host of "Out At The Center". He has headlined several of his own shows at the legendary comedy club Carolines on Broadway, and as an actor, appeared as a special guest star in the long running Off-Broadway hit Tony N Tina's Wedding, repeating his performance for an extended run in the Las Vegas Production, and was then seen in a featured role in The War of the Roses.

Tomlin, Arnaz & More Campaign for Channing Kennedy Center Honor (SOURCE BROADWAYWORLD.COM) A slew of celebrities are joining forces to demand that legendary actress Carol Channing be selected for the 2010 Kennedy Center Honors. Carol Channing's illustrious and varied career spans movies, Broadway, TV, countless albums, authoring a book and has earned her three Tony Awards, a Golden Globe and and Oscar nomination. Carol Channing originated the role of Lorelei Lee in the Broadway production of 'Gentlemen Prefer Blondes' for which she won the 1974 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. Channing also originated the role of Dolly Gallagher Levi in Broadway's 'Hello Dolly!' for which she garnered the 1964 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical. Other theatrical credits include 'Jerry's Girls', 'Sugar Babies', 'Lorelei', 'Lend an Ear', 'Show Girl', 'Jule's Friends at the Palace', 'Pygmalion', 'The Vamp' (which earned her a 1956 Tony Award for Best Actress in a Musical) and 'Let's Face It!'. Film credits include 'Thoroughly Modern MIllie', 'Paid in Full', 'Skidoo', 'Alice in Wonderland', and 'Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band'. In 1995, Channing received the Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement.

She created two of the iconic roles in the American Musical Theatre: Lorelei Lee and Dolly Gallagher Levi. Carol is a true original performer who has never stopped giving all of her comedic gifts to the American public. I sincerely hope she receives this accolade.

Paul Brogan · Carol Channing is a legend and on top of that one of the most tireless and giving individuals in the world. As she approaches 90 she and her amazing husband Harry are canvasing the country in support of arts in the schools. I brought her to NH in 2007 and 2008 to help fundraise for those infected and affected with HIV/AIDS and she raised tens of thousands of dollars and created an awareness that was previously almost non-existent. For 70 years she has brought smiles to millions with her performances, winning Tony's, a Golden Globe and being Oscar-nominated along to way, to barely touch on the honors bestowed upon this fine person. The Kennedy Center Honor would be a fitting recognition for a lifetime of always embracing humanity.
