REMEMBERING LUCY WHO PASSED 30 YEARS AGO TODAY

Three Legends of comedy: Channing, Betty White, Lucille Ball
The secret to staying young is to live honestly, eat slowly, and lie about your age.
-Lucille Ball

April 26, 2019!
April 26 is the 116th day of the year. 249 days remain until the end of the year.
I want to take you back 30 years. I was 28 and living on my own in New York
I was living on 33rd Street in Manhattan. I was up for a role in John Glines' new show, Men of Manhattan (which I got!).
I was working at Marie's Crisis on Grove Street and I was dating a guy that died of AIDS several years after we broke up. Also, 30 years ago today, Lucille Ball passed away. That didn't seem possible. This incredible woman had been so much a part of my life for the first 28 years of my life adding so much laughter.  Lucy was a 'friend'. She had been in our living rooms since the 50s.
She was still there when I came along in 1961 and continues to be here.
I Love Lucy was shown in the early evenings in syndication when I was growing up in South Carolina and we used to watch as we were getting ready for supper. No matter how many times we watched those shows, we still laughed at the same routines over and over.
In the summer, The Lucy Show was on in the mornings and I used to watch all of them as well.
Here's Lucy was on from 1968-1974. My grandmother Skipper had a color television and we used to watch there on Monday nights. When this series went off the air in 1974, I was 13 and depressed. Luckily for all of us, she was still contracted to do a few television specials. 1974 was also the year I made my stage debut and it was in Mame, the same year of the movie version starring Lucille Ball. I don't remember it coming to my home town. I didn't see it until it aired on NBC for the first time several years later.
On September 26th, 1986, there was a lot of hoopla when Lucy returned to network television in Life With Lucy.
Life with Lucy
This was her only television series not on CBS. It was on ABC.
I was doing stock in Massachusetts. I settled into my hotel room and wanted to get a bite to eat. I ran across the Massachusetts turnpike to a restaurant across from the hotel, grabbed something to go, and almost got arrested trying to cross back over. The policeman told me I could've gotten killed but because I was from out of town, I didn't get arrested. All I had on my mind was Lucy's return to network television! Unfortunately, this series was short lived and that was sad. It was Lucy's first 'failure' as far as a series is concerned.

November 5th, 1985 was a Tuesday night and like most of the country, I tuned in to Lucy's made for TV movie, Stone Pillow.
It was anything but funny. It dealt with the homeless situation here in New York. It was sad to see Lucy like this but we were able to see what a great dramatic actress she was. She WAS a great dramatic actress. Watch The Big Street tonight opposite Henry Fonda.
Not a trace of Lucy Ricardo in that performance!
Lucille Ball also had a major impact on me in my life. My introduction to Carol Channing came through Lucy when she portrayed her on The Lucy Show.  At first, I thought Carol was a fictitious character because of this way over the top portrayal. When I did discover Carol, a lifelong love affair began!

Years later, I would see Carol Channing in Jamestown, Lucille Ball's home town, as part of the Lucy-Desi Days (May 26-28, 2000).  It was also on that trip that I met Teensie and Weensie (from I Love Lucy episode Tennessee Bound), The Borden Twins, and they became good friends of mine thanks to Glen Charlow.  Roz and Marilyn were their actual names and they came to my show a few times when I was performing in San Francisco, AS Carol Channing! Roz went first, but Marilyn once had dinner at our home (May 30th, 2005 we celebrated their birthday), an evening I will never forget!
Speaking of Glen Charlow, the biggest Lucy fan I know. He takes fan worship to a whole new level. His home is a virtual museum to Lucy. He is also featured in the A and E Biography of Lucille Ball.

I'm sure that many who read this blog have similar stories to tell.

The truth is Lucy never left us. She is as vibrant in our lives today than she was even thirty five years ago.

In June 1984, in New York , Lucy spoke at The Museum of Television and Radio and it is a huge disappointment that I didn't get there.
The closest I came to seeing her LIVE was when I saw Diane Findlay portray her years ago in I
with Suzanne LaRusch
Loved Lucy
and Suzanne LaRusch who portrayed Lucille Ball in An Evening with Lucille Ball: Thanks for Asking, directed by Lucie Arnaz.
The 61st Academy Awards ceremony, organized by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences  was on March 29, 1989.  That was Lucille Ball's last television appearance. She, along with Bob Hope, introduced a segment called The Stars of Tomorrow. That year's broadcast was also produced by Alan Carr and is infamous because it included the bizarre opening of Rob Lowe and Snow White which probably put the nail in the coffin of production numbers at the Oscars.

Lucille Ball is STILL being celebrated.
Last night, It was a crowd of more than 200, including family, fans and over 50 industry personalities, that gathered as The Hollywood Museum (1660 N. Highland Ave (Highland and Hollywood Blvd) opened its Lobby Tribute to
Jeffry Denman and Diane Findlay in the world premiere of "I Loved Lucy."

The tribute honors the memory of the woman all American's loved, Lucy, on the 30th anniversary of her passing (April 26th, 1989). The President and Founder of The Hollywood Museum, Donelle Dadigan, was proud to announce the launch of the Lucille Ball Lobby Tribute, as special items related to the career and life of the Queen of Comedy were unveiled and highlighted in both the lobby and the "Redheads Only Room," where Max Factor created and perfected Lucy's

I am posting the following from Facebook from Steven Mosher and I hope he doesn't mind. I saw his show last Friday night at Don't Tell Mama and it was one of the best shows I've seen in a long time! GO SEE Stephen and tell him I sent you. Bravo

I must say how grateful I am for the support I am being shown from the Cabaret community and the MAC members who are helping light the way for me as I have been making my inaugural voyage into the world of nightclub performing.
Sidney Myer could not be more loving and supportive in his efforts to bring THE STORY TELLER to
the stage and his entire team at Don't Tell Mama (Erik Strebig, Randy Cohen Lester, Max Friedman and Joseph, whose last name I don't know) has been a dream to work with. My friend, MAC Award nominee Dorian Woodruff has been a wealth of advice whenever I need it and Public Relations experts Peter Michael Marino and Richard Hillman have been a backbone of support, not to mention reviewer Bart Greenberg, who told me to keep doing this.
And looking out into the audience and seeing people like MAC nominee Leanne Borghesi, MAC winners Anita Gillette and Tim Cahill and the always supportive King of Positive Energy Richard Skipper didn't scare me like I thought it would .. it made me calm and strong. I am overwhelmed by the welcome this community has given me, a cabaret neophyte. Thank you, Georga Osborne for being the person who told me to just shut up and do it - some of the best advice I ever got.
I am really looking forward to my last two shows at Don't Tell Mama on May 1 and 7. I can't wait to see what comes next.begging for more!"

Her Name Is Barbra and On Sunday She Is Being Celebrated

I am simple, complex, generous, selfish, unattractive, beautiful, lazy, and driven.
-Barbra Streisand

Today is Barbra Streisand's birthday and I have spent the day immersed in her music. She truly does make my soul soar. She is someone who should be celebrated daily and I don't think a day goes by in which I don't hear one of her songs.
For the past few years around this time I write about impresario Clifford Bell's LA celebration in LA for Project Angel Food. I was even asked to participate this year but due to my crazy schedule these days, I was unable to attend which kills me and it kills me even more because of the friends and cast that I'm missing by not being there. I think this should be done through Concert Window and they could make even more money!
If you are in LA Sunday night, GO! GO!! GO!!! You will thank me and it's all for a good cause!

Kurt Glenn is making this petition to let the Roundabout Theatre Company know to produce this cult musical on Broadway for its 2019-20 or 2020-21 season. This is one of my most favorite musicals and I realize that Broadway haven't had a show that is provocative, sexy and dazzling since the revivals of "Chicago" and "Cabaret" (which Roundabout already did twice, in 1998 and 2014).

Interesting article on today's concert going experience: I was recently in New York City at a Tony Bennett concert. People had their phones out all over the place. Some were recording videos. They were up and down ... mostly up, even getting drinks. This wasn’t in a tent somewhere. This was Radio City Music Hall. Read MORE

Tootsie Review
We’ve all had that moment of genius, usually while getting stuck on TCM, when the brilliant idea reveals itself to us: This film really deserves a remake, an update stripped of archaic notions or bad hair and polished to a shiny modern sheen. Some movies all but demand it. Tootsie isn’t one. Sydney Pollack’s 1982 film starring Dustin Hoffman seems so perfectly of its time – right down to the blissful ignorance of its unexamined mansplaining – that any fiddling would seem as unnecessary as spray tan on a president. Rodgers and Hammerstein’s classic musical Oklahoma!, which celebrates its 75th anniversary this
year—and has returned to Broadway in a vibrant new production—will be celebrated at the 92Y May 4–6 as part of Lyrics and Lyricists.
Rodgers and Hammerstein President Ted Chapin will host the presentations of A Beautiful Dawning—Oklahoma! at 75, which are directed by Parker Esse, with music direction by pianist Andy Einhorn.
In addition to beloved songs from the score, Chapin will examine songs cut from the production during its pre-Broadway run, such as Boys and Girls Like You and Me (later used in State Fair on Broadway), while also exploring Oklahoma's continued relevance 75 years after its history-making Broadway premiere.

Speaking of Oklahoma!, Director Daniel Fish’s revisionist take on the Rodgers and Hammerstein classic, Oklahoma!, is a vibrant, more modern rendering of the ground-breaking musical.  Not everything the production has to offer works effectively, but there is enough on stage to reinvigorate and propel the show to satisfying heights. When director Daniel Fish’s sultry, sinister take on Rodgers and Hammerstein’s 1943 musical game-changer Oklahoma! came to St. Ann’s Warehouse last fall, I, along with most of my critical colleagues, felt a bit like the show’s own Ado Annie: tingling with excitement and helpless to resist. Following a season marked by debate over the revival of “classic” musicals — how much vitality these works retain, what kind of reexaminations are warranted by the present moment, who’s doing the reexamining — Oklahoma! ripped into town like a brushfire: potent, illuminating, and rejuvenating. It was on the one hand so well produced and directed that an audience immediately feels taken care of, but then the consummate mastery of Richard's hosting skills to embrace the audience and the moment(s) and harvest such humor and pleasure from the unexpected.  Do I really have to wait until May for another one?  LOVE this series, and so grateful for the laughs and the heart. Rose Kingsley

Rose Kingsley
I'm gonna love you like nobody's loved you come rain or come shine.
― Johnny Mercer

Happy Monday, April 8th, 2019
It's been a while since I've sat down to write a blog. I've been busy! But I can't think of a better subject to write about.

One of the wonderful things about social media is that from time to time, people come into our lives with very little effort.
That is the case with Rose Kingsley who I'm writing about today. We had corresponded a few times online, even speaking once. When she heard I was going out to Palm Springs last month, even though she had never met me, graciously offered my husband and I a place to stay while we were out there.  We had already made hotel rooms, but they provided the most incredible dinner at their home in Palm Desert the night after we arrived.
She was outside to greet us as we showed up and it was as if I was seeing a long lost friend.
We were introduced to her wonderful husband Norm, and their lovable Bassett, Sadie, who I immediately bonded with. We were also serenaded, somewhat, by her exotic birds Puccini and Larry. Her daughter named him after Richard Kline's character on Three's Company.
We had a delicious dinner and after dinner, her musical director, Bob Corwin and his beautiful wife, Samantha, arrived for dessert after playing a gig themselves.
Bob is the son-in-law, pianist, and collaborator of The Great Johnny Mercer. He has worked with just about everyone in the business and his stories had me in stitches. Remind me to tell you sometime about his experiences with Sid Caesar and Barbara Eden sometime.
His wife is the daughter of Jeri Sullivan who helped pen the lyrics to Rum and Coca Cola, along with Morey Amsterdam.
The evening would STILL be going on if Bob had not said that he was tired and needed to get home!
Rose and Norm arranged our last night to also be with them and we went out for a nice leisurely dinner. We got the red eye back to New York.
And, now, Rose and Norm are coming to New York!
Because of her collaboration with Bob, she has devoted a lot of her performing to the body of work of Johnny Mercer. It was a great opportunity to sing my favorite Mercer song, Moon River, with Rose and Bob.
Please join me on May 10th as I celebrate Rose Kingsley as she celebrates Johnny Mercer. She will be joined by Richard Shelton, who is widely regarded as the world's best interpreter of Frank Sinatra and nominated 'Best Actor in a Leading Role' for playing Sinatra. I was lucky enough to interview Richard a few years ago. Check it out HERE. They will be taking us on a journey of Sinatra with his music and stories, Rose is a newbie to the world of cabaret having had an amazing career as an  opera diva.  Now, Rose returns to Lincoln Center, with songs and stories of the Great Johnny Mercer.
I thought it would be fun to conduct a fun interview with Rose. I hope you will take the time to Google her and that you will also join us on the 10th of May.

Who have you met or talked to in the last 30 days you think I should meet?
Hmmmmmm I meet so many people .....probably ...... DAVID ZIMMERMAN.... Who is The Artistic Director for “ MEET THE BIZ” in Hollywood and PERFORMING ARTS STUDIO, WEST! His Studio is comprised of “ Special Needs' “ Artists , Who study Acting , Voice & Dance ...,,,, Most have been cast in major Motion Pictures , Plays and TV !!! I have done a Master Class and it was a Phenomenal Experience !!!!!

Seen any great documentaries I have to see?
I happen to Love Documentaries ...... Probably the movie “ FIRST MAN “ that depicts the “personal life” of Neil Armstrong, first Man to walk on the Moon !

with David Zimmerman
What's a hobby you always wanted to pick up but never did?
You know ......... my entire life has been 'comprised' around my Music , never REALLY having much time for hobbies ...... but if I had to pick one it would probably “ Flying “! I’ve always had a keen interest in the exploration of Space and was actually chosen to be “ the first Artist “ to fly in the Shuttle , at that time when they were choosing Civilians!!!!!

What has been the highlight of your day so far? (This was conducted yesterday, April 7, 2019)
Today it was attending “ PALM SPRINGS OPERA IN THE PARK ...a Beautiful Day , filled with Beautiful Music and Fabulous Singers! What could be better ?

Are you reading anything right now that you love?
I do love to read , but at the moment I’m really not involved in one specific book !

What are your plans for celebrating Johnny Mercer at The Bruno Walter Auditorium on May 10th?
Rehearsing, Rehearsing and more Rehearsing !!!!!!! 😆. Mercer is sooooooo Prolific and I absolutely love all of his music !!! It seems Mercer Songs and my Voice fit like “ a hand in Glove ! “ No matter how many songs I sing in my vast repertoire...,,, I always find my way back to Mercer !!!! With my Heart and Soul In MERCER .... and Richard Shelton ‘s Heart & Soul In SINATRA the Sinatra /Mercer Show is going to be nothing short of Brilliant!

What is the most fun thing you've done in the last quarter you think I should do. too?
We spent 4 Glorious Days in Beautiful San Diego , Ca !!! Spectacular Weather, Blue Ocean, Culture and Culinary Delights !!!!!! We had ground field seats at THE PADRE/ GIANT BASEBALL GAME and attended Opening Night Of Bizet’s “ CARMEN “ at The SAN DIEGO OPERA !!!!! Definitely a Must !!!!!!

When a show doesn’t work is there a way of knowing why?
Performing for David Zimmerman's class

Oh yes !!!! I believe you know it from the beginning ....you feel it , at least I do !..before the curtain even  rises !!! If it’s not “ right” ..... the answer is usually very blatant!!!!!

What surprised you the most about the job/business you are in?
Being in this business since I was 4 .... nothing REALLY Surprises me .......What has surprised me, though , since performing on the Opera Stage for most of my life , now Performing Jazz, Blues and The GreatAmerican Songbook .....when you are hired in Opera , you are hired on your ability to SING !!!! I find that being hired in the Jazz/Blue Genre ....,you are hired on “ How Many Seats Can you FILL‼️” 😆

How does YOUR art get done?
Practice, Practice and MORE PRACTICE!  As The a great Pianist Arthur Rubinstein once said .......” If I don’t practice for one day , I notice ........ if I don’t practice two days my family notices , but I don’t practice for 3 days .... THE WORLD NOTICES !!!! 👍

Rose and Norm
Who is someone you really admire?
My HUSBAND, MANAGER & AGENT !!!!
What a Great Man who’s work ethic never Tires or ends , Never to tired to go that EXTRA MILE and no “ stone “ is never too big to be overturned !!! .....,,, Along with his positive attitude and Smile... makes for ADORATION !!!!!

Name one person you would like to see profiled in this series
Gee ....... so many come to mind .....,,,,,,,, but maybe TONY BENNETT  ....... at 92 is still going strong !!!!!  (Rose, make it happen!)

What’s the advice you’d give a teenager or someone just starting out going into your line of work
IF YOU CAN DREAM IT ....... YOU CAN DO IT “! NEVER, NEVER GIVE UP !!!!!!!!

A Few Audience Testimonials about Richard Skipper Celebrates
Just watched Richard Skipper's interview with Tom Wopat and it was sensational! It was informative, interesting, and sprinkled with humor. I LOVE Richard's interviews and look forward to the next one! Please keep 'em coming, Richard

When Richard Skipper hosts the party is ON! He sparkles with a charm that is sincere, sophisticated and frequently HILARIOUS!! He asks excellent questions when he interviews guests that always lead naturally to fascinating answers and when he ad-libs with the audience he's amazingly quick-witted and endlessly entertaining. In my book, he's the Best of the Best - Always puts on a fabulous, happily satisfying show - I love him to bits!!
Sheree Sano, NYC

Richard Skipper did a great job MCing the program the other night. I've worked with the best (incl. Jack Benny and Sid Caesar), and his stage presence and delivery are right up there.
