We're In This Together: Part One In A New Series...Today, Let's Celebrate Patricia Fitzpatrick

The truth does not change according to our ability to stomach it.”

― Flannery O'Connor

Happy Wednesday, March 22nd

Most of the time, we’re thinking and living from the surface, instead of living from the spirit.
I read those words this AM as I was doing my Morning Pages (Thank you, Julia Cameron, The Artist's Way).

Today marks my 15th day in Social Distancing. Anyone who knows me KNOWS this is hard for me.  I do believe this is a lesson from the Universe to teach us to no longer take our friends and those things that matter to us for granted. We ALL are in this together and to get me through this. I have chosen to get out of my own mindset and into that of those I love,
AD for Cougars  2012
respect, and admire. Close friends may know some of the people I write about. Some you may not know. Whether you are straight, gay, lesbian, white, black, Asian, or any other religion, Blue, red, indifferent.

We are ALL in this together. I want to introduce you to my
friends and maybe I will make some new friends as we progress.
To kick off this series, I reached out to my friend Patricia Fitzpatrick.

Richard Skipper Celebrates Patricia Fitzpatrick
Born in Brooklyn NY 1941 – do the math! Fitzpatrick always knew she wanted to entertain an audience.
She and her sisters would produce live stage events, Sundays after Mass, at their childhood home in Malvern, Long Island.
At the age of 17, Fitzpatrick was ‘discovered’ by Celeste Holmes singing in a night club on Cape Cod. Holmes gave her a business card for a talent manager at MGM Records
in New York City. Under the stage name ‘Sandy Beach’, Fitzpatrick cut a demo record, at the Brill Building for MGM.
Instead of the career she had hoped for, Fitzpatrick attended the University of Detroit, met and married her husband and traveled the country as a Navy Officer’s wife. During this period Fitzpatrick appeared in local community theater, was the featured ‘girl singer’ at the Detroit Playboy Club and raised her family of five children.
Thirty - five years, five children and a career in hotel sales management for Holiday Inn’s later... she went back to performing. She appeared at Don’t Tell Mama in her debut show
Patricia Fitzpatrick
“It’s About Time!” with Musical Director Bobby Wetherbee. Stu Hamstra,

cabaret reviewer, called Fitzpatrick “Fitzpatrick is a breath of fresh air. “The real deal.”
“One of the best storytellers in cabaret today!”
Since her first debut at Don’t Tell Mama in NYC she has been nominated twice for a MAC (Manhattan Association of Cabarets and Clubs) Award, [ “I’m Single Again, and this Time It’s Not My Fault!” and “Cougars on the Prowl” with Musical Director Barry Levitt and guest stars Dana Lorge and
Helena Grenot]. She recorded two CD’s “ A Dream or Two” and “ Basically Blue?” now on Amazon and CD Baby, appeared as a featured performer with the Jay Phelps Trio at the famed Ronnie Scott’s in London, England , two seasons at the Five Diamond, The
Sugar Club in Antiqua with Bobby Wetherbee , Little Onion, Denver, Colorado, Top of the Pru and Club Café, Boston and Germano’s in Baltimore. To date Fitzpatrick has appeared at NYC, The Metropolitan Room, The Iguana with Richard Skipper and Dana Lorge, The Duplex, and over 28 shows at Don’t Tell Mama.
Dana Lorge

The retired Director of Tourism for the Town of Provincetown (1998- 2005), Fitzpatrick
first saw cabaret performed at a festival begun by producer John O’Neil. In 2014, her
production company Ambassador Productions picked up the discarded festival and returned it to Provincetown.
Last year, the CabaretFest 2019 was the largest gathering
of cabaret performers in New England.
This year is the 20th Anniversary of the cabaret
festival and Fitzpatrick is praying that the festival can be held under decision until April
CabaretFest

27, due to the COVID 19 pandemic) .
Festival dates May 127 – May 31 2020 feature
Master Classes, education, solo shows, Variety Show, Open Mic and guest star John
Davidson.
“Music heals our souls. Performers come together to create a space for nurturing and peace. We need a festival to bring us together once again. I pray we'll all be safe and be able to celebrate live music and music education again this year.”, said Fitzpatrick

What cancellations have you endured due to the Coronavirus?
I am also a step on tour guide for New England. Many of the tours for the spring have cancelled. I have not had to cancel any singing engagements – yet!

Do you have a structured routine during this time?
Yes. I make my bed, get dressed, have my coffee, turn on the computer and begin my day by 9 AM. I try to step outside at least once a day to breath the fresh air!

Name one thing you’ve learned about yourself during this time.
CabaretFest Finale 2018

I enjoy my own company. I always find some project to begin and will not go to bed until it is finished! I can not be still for long periods of time.

What song(s) are you currently listening to during this time?
Always have Alexa playing Broadway show tunes or Sinatra station.

It even plays songs by Patricia Fitzpatrick, when asked. LOL Always! My life has a musical score in the background – like a movie! (It's true! I'm listening as I type these words! Hope you readers will do the same!)

Do you believe our spirit lives on after we pass on?
Absolutely! I have
always thought I was here before. I meet people and realize we knew each other in
another life!

Our bodies disappear. Our spirit is energy and as such, never dies!

What has been a challenge you have faced during this time
Not being able to see, touch or hug those I love, my children, family and friends. Touch is so very important.

Lighting round! Describe each of the following in one word: Who you are, what you value the most, and what you’d be if you were a food item.
1. Who Am I? - Mother
2. What I value the most? Memories
3. What food item would I be? Peach

What do you like least?
People who lie to my face. It is an insult. Also, can’t stand filthy
language. We have so many wonderful words. Find one that explains how you are feeling.  Stop using swear words as language substitutes.

What do you want MOST for the current POTUS to accomplish?
The one thing I want the current POTUS to accomplish is his complete retirement from government as soon as possible.

Thank you, Patricia Fitzpatrick, for the gifts you have given to the world and will continue to give.

Now, everyone, please go and and do something nice for someone without expecting anything in return! Go to the 7th friend in your friend's list and call them! We're ALL in this together! Till tomorrow...

Oleg Frish, Lisa Yaeger, Doris, Dear...and More!

Oleg Frish
Get out of your head and get into your heart. Think less, feel more.
-Osho

Happy Saturday, November 10th, 2017!
November 11 is the 315th day of the year. There are 50 days remaining until the end of the year.
Welcome to an eleven day, everyone!
Be sure that you have considered all of the options and potential consequences of anything you make your mind up about.
Because my working life is going well, I am indulging in daydreams in which I'm at the top of the heap, perhaps even famous! And I desire to bring along with me those that need to be known on a wider scale. Until that happens, it will have to suffice here in my blog! I'm using my practicality to map out a workable course of action.  Dreams manifest through planning and hard work. I'm getting ready to make some major changes to the way you do business.  I am not shrinking away from what could potentially advance me.
I'm sometimes confused about what action is correct.  Stretch beyond your normal energy for a good cause today.  Good food, favorite activities and quality time with good friends. These things will have you feeling more optimistic.
Continuing with my series of shows that you may not necessarily would know about. If you go to one of these shows, please let them know I sent you! In these moments, we are connecting in very real ways.
Lisa Yaeger
Tonight, Lisa Yaeger closes her run at Don't Tell Mama.
Lisa was named 1st Runner up of the inaugural season of Mama's Next Big Act at
Don't Tell Mama. She has been seen regularly at The Metropolitan Room, The Laurie

Beechman, 54 Below, Don't Tell Mama and Pangea. She has toured nationally as well as
performed various roles regionally. Her voice can be heard on PBS Kids and has been
featured on The Broadway Carols for The Cures CD. I sent her three questions for my blog today. Here are the questions AND her
answers!

Have you ever longed to be a movie star or participate in some way in the film industry?
Of course, who hasn’t? But not the Hollywood of today.. Old Hollywood, with Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, Greta Garbo… I love reading all of the old autobiographies of those beautiful famous people

List three "gifts" that you've gotten over the years from friends or family members - not the kind you can unwrap, but the kind that have contributed to the person you are today.
Well Gift #1 is for the unconditional support I get from my family, my parents, especially!

They have attended almost every single performance I have ever done.. they drove up to see all of my recitals in College at the Crane School of Music, 6(!) hours away.. and they even drove to Virginia Beach to see a show I was in once! Their support means so much in the crazy business where we tend to doubt ourselves a lot!

Gift #2 is obviously my son. He came to us through adoption as an infant, and we have been SO blessed. Being a parent has absolutely contributed to the person I am today. He makes me want to be a better person, to be kinder, to be patience (which has its moments and I am constantly working on ha!) and of course to strive to become a better artist.

Gift #3 I think would have to be from my very first voice teacher and mentor. Walter Blazer. His love for music pushed me to be the best i can be and will always stay with me, especially when i feel like the business has gotten me down. He has since passed away, but I always think of his big beautiful smile and his JOY!

What Do you like Most about this business?
The ability to create art and music! And cabaret has been such an amazing platform for that. The theater has always been my first love, but in theater you portray a character and bring parts of you into each person you play. In cabaret, its YOU! You create the story you want to tell, you find the music you connect to and the possibilities are endless. Its so rewarding, and so intimate, which I love.

Not to mention getting to work with some of the most incredible musicians in the city

Go see Lisa Yaeger TONIGHT at DON'T TELL MAMA 7PM show. CASH ONLY!

Tomorrow night, catch Oleg Frish at The Iridium!

What Do you like Most about this business?
Creative moments, meeting  other talented people, touring and live appearances

What Do you like least about it?
The genre of cabaret targets more an audience of 55 and older and does not attract to younger generation. This is sad, because there are people of 25+ who would like to be involved in it and

bring their friends to shows, but they want to see younger crowd in clubs and theaters and also - performers of their age. Sadly, there are no TV programs about cabaret and jazz, no radio programs on FM  stations and only a few well known younger performers . I heard this said that this genre is dying.  But I am sure there are ways to bring the genre back to new audiences.

What change would you like to see in your lifetime?
I want the genre to become more popular and widespread and I would love to host a national program about jazz and cabaret.

Someone else who should have a national program is Ray DeForest as Doris Dear

The Doris Dear Christmas Special is coming to The Triad Theater via The Metropolitan Room on Dec 13th and 20th. They were sold out last year at 54 Below.... but this year, they have moved AND LOWERED THE PRICE! And as you might know... the Triad only requires two  drinks not a dollar amount minimum and Doris Dear loves it
there! Ray started this journey as Doris Dear there five years ago! So go on out to a great Holiday Show with guests Sean Harkness, the a fore mentioned Lisa Yaeger, Director Lina Koutrakos and Musical Director Rick Jensen.

Get you tickets early here:
Doris Dear Christmas Special

Have you ever longed to be a movie star or participate in some way in the film industry? Doris Dear was born to be a star (at least in her own head!) Actually I adore being on stage and spent 12 years on TV giving advice and teaching gardening, pet care, cooking and interior design. I have also been featured in several films and I loved It but my true love is telling the stories about my parents Taffy and Duke on stage and sharing the wonderful advice they passed on to me

List three "gifts" that you've gotten over the years from friends or family members - not the kind you can unwrap, but the kind that have contributed to the person you are today.
I have been very lucky to have had several individuals who have been mentors to me over the years in the industry and in my life. A true gift is being friends with Larry Kramer, who has taught me to fight the fight and never be anything but yourself.

What Do you like Most about this business? I love that I get to share my life experiences with people who I may not even know. The fact that thy are willing to sit for 70 minutes at a time and listen to me absolutely surprises me time and time again. That I get to do that for a living is truly what I consider a success.

Also worth mentioning:

The Enormously Powerful Don't Have To Be Cool To Be Accepted

with the AUTHENTIC Randy Jones of The Village People
I think all great innovations are based on rejections.
-Louise Nevelson, Russian-American artist (1900-1988)

Happy MONDAY, July 24th, 2017!
July 24 is the 205th day of the year. There are 160 days remaining until the end of the year. This date is slightly more likely to fall on a Tuesday, Friday or Sunday (58 in 400 years each) than on Wednesday or Thursday (57), and slightly less likely to occur on a Monday or Saturday (56).
Therefore, there is a uniqueness to this day...or as I say always, to EVERY DAY! It is a rainy overcast day here in New York. Before I even start, it's a birthday shout out to Kristin Chenoweth!
She's one of my favorites and I would LOVE to interview her!
As I began today's blog I was listening to Leslie Uggams singing My Own Morning from Hallelujah, Baby!
That song sums up my feelings and emotions today. Once upon a time there was a man named Richard Skipper who was/is a work in progress!
Today is a special day in my life. Six years ago today, Danny and I were legally wed.
Danny and I have been together 27 years! However, 6 years ago TODAY, we became legal! We have the distinction of being one of the first 100 couples to get wed legally in NY. I'm looking forward to the next 27 years.
Danny and I with my little Me, our niece Lakyn

Daniel Sherman completes my life on a level I never thought possible. I am one of the lucky ones. I thank God and the Universe daily! The day of our marriage, Tom and Leslie Orofino not only were our witnesses, they were our chauffeurs and the most amazing friends you could possibly imagine. Also our friends Joe and Pat Sopiak, and Douglas Houston and Frank Russo (who got married earlier this year) were there for us! Counting my blessings today with a great husband AND great friends! Make it a great day, EVERYONE! It's up to US!

The energy of today has been erratic, and I am hopping all over the place.
It also has been very expansive.

I am going through a 'letting go' phase in my life. I am letting go of those aspects, things, and, yes, people who are not serving my life on a positive uplifting level.
The title of my blog today once again comes from one of my horoscopes. As I've said in previous blogs, whether you believe in them or not, there is always food for thought in them. Last night, a 'friend' of mine unfriended me on Facebook.
Not because of something I said, but, rather, because of what was said by a couple of friends of mine. I feel like I'm trying to grab a slippery fish with greased hands.
I'm letting the fish swim away for now. I can always catch another one later if I need to. Social media has really screwed up how we communicate in the 21st century.
It has its pluses...but I'm beginning to think that the negatives are far outreaching the positives. I have a confession to make: I'm addicted!
When I reached the 5,000 (the limit) mark on Facebook, I felt like I arrived! I cannot tell you when that was but it WAS sometime ago. I felt like I had become popular. I love it when all eyes are on me, so all those 'friends' had me smiling like crazy as if they were paparazzi hanging on to my every move and post!
I have given up the notion of desiring to have 'notches' on Facebook. I truly want an experience that is reflective of my REAL life.
Over the course of the last few years as my career and life have taken me down different paths, I am finding it useful to connect with those that are interested in who I am instead of what I have to offer and I am looking for 'accountability partners' who help to ensure that I actually implement that which I am learning. This is good!
My life is an open book and I wear my emotions and feelings on my sleeves...AND in print!
I  have been going through daily my Facebook friends and 'unfriending' those that I have no interaction with. I have a daily goal of clicking on 25 friends on Facebook and taking a closer look at how our lives are intertwined. I have been having some stark realizations. Some names I don't even recognize! Did they reach out to me or did I reach out to them?
I have taken a deep breath and am realizing that THIS is EXACTLY where I am supposed to be at this point in the process of my life's journey. Although it may be a difficult decision - it will be worth it in the long term.  I am just an ordinary guy, not much different from any other.
According to my charts, a wonderful new seven-year cycle has just begun in which my talents of sensitivity and intuition are more on the "in" than on the "out".
As I go through and am clearing, I am making way for new possibilities and opportunities.
There are times when I wonder, why isn't this working faster?  I'm all about power now.
As one real friend just posted,  It gets so tiring some days. on FB/media. One wants to just do business, stay in touch with the real friends in the real world, and let the techie "I don't know who you are, what you'll say or do next, can I trust you world" to the robots.
Opportunities and TRUE friends come when we harness the full power of our minds as well as our bearings.
Of course, daily, all of us face obstacles and we sometimes feel stuck where we are.
The world has changed since last year, and no one of us is immune to changes occurring in our personal lives. As an artist and all of my artist friends can attest to this, sometimes we hit plateaus in which it seems as if we are making no progress whatsoever. That is how I've been feeling for the past month and a half...maybe even longer.  I am opening up to a new way of living with others.

I follow Dee Wallace, the actress.  My eyes light up when I think of her.
Did you know she is a very spiritual woman? I have had the honor of interviewing Dee twice. I love her outlook on life. She is a great writer, as well, and I use her book as a guide. Recently, I
received a newsletter in which she felt a lot of people were letting her down.
She wrote that she heard herself proclaim out loud, "Everyone is letting me down." She goes on to write, "When you hear yourself say or think perceptions like that, you better believe there is a pony in the poop somewhere. A big one!"
She realized she was getting angrier and angrier. She felt like she was exploding inside. On the exterior, she was bravely facing all the challenges before her. Inside, she was creating a nervous breakdown. She woke up at six that morning and her mind was churning. She could feeeeeeel the anger!!! She could not stop the ongoing flow of thoughts that...she didn't desire. Sound familiar? That's when we say things like, "I don't want to feel this way, but I CAN'T HELP IT." And it felt like that was her truth. She threw off the covers and stumbled into the office.
This took her straight to a core belief "that I have to give up myself to take care of the people I love." Sound familiar? It certainly does with me!
WE DO NOT HAVE TO GIVE OURSELVES UP!  I should have known.
Dee goes on to tell us that she shares this with us because, if you are feeling like "you can't help it" there is, undoubtedly, another layer forces us to peel to get to the pony. I'm hanging in there. Will you? As soon as we understand what part of US is fighting US, we will be free. Thank you. Dee Wallace!  Know You Are the Answer!!!

If you are pointing the finger away from yourself, you will never find the answer that sets you free.

Richard's  Recommendations
From Balthasar Billups, BROADWAY BABYLON  : Looks like Broadway's hottest ticket is Off Broadway. A Clockwork Orange reimagined for the stage. Director Alexandra Spencer-Jones’ electrifying London stage adaptation of the 1962 book and 1971 film A Clockwork Orange will make its New York premiere at off-Broadway's New World Stages.

Previews will begin on September 2 with an opening night set for September 25.  The work will run through January 6, 2018.
Jonno Davies, who led the London cast, will make his New York Stage debut in the lead role of Alex De-Large.
A Clockwork Orange lures audiences into a glass-edged, testosterone-filled underworld of a dystopian future. The explosive story of little Alex and his rebellious gang of Droogs is a groundbreaking classic of orgiastic ultra-violence and sexuality. The work is described as an unapologetic celebration of the human condition. Anthony Burgess’ book A Clockwork Orange has widely been considered a cultural landmark since its release. Stanley Kubrick’s film, an immediate hit with American audiences, was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture. This 2017 production celebrates the centennial of Burgess’ birth, in 1917.

This is an important event. Annie Ross, the legendary Jazz singer who's been a resident for

Bernie Furshpan will be hosting it. Annie hasn't been herself in the past few months and sometimes has difficulty performing, but she's a fighter, a classy, elegant fighter. Please go out on Tues at 9pm and give her the due she deserves for all the pleasure she's given us and the world. Before Liberace entered the world of glitz and glamour, the legendary showman crossed paths with history's most notorious gangster and his girlfriend, forming a unique bond. Featuring a lavish original score, this world premiere musical explores the phantasmagorical life of the iconic performer and his nearly career-shattering struggle to maintain privacy with respect to his sexual orientation. I am declaring that this is going to be a great week for me.  Won't you join me? Don't be afraid to show compassion and caring. Author Ellen Wittlinger wrote, “When there’s an elephant in the room, you can’t pretend it isn’t there and just discuss the ants.” Never forget, you are your most passionate advocate.

My boyfriend and I joined the American Popular Song Society a few months ago and have enjoyed all the programs so far. Richard's tribute to Judy Garland last week was the perfect way to top off the season! It was wonderful to see clips from every one of her films (many of which I need to add to my collection) and the performances were great! Richard is a dynamic host and a fantastic advocate for the preservation and celebration of the American Songbook and Musical Theatre. I look forward to many more Richard Skipper productions!
